This week, while I was in Spiez at the ASTTIASTTI is the Swiss professional association for translators, terminologist and interpreters. I knew of the association before I attended its Financial Translation Summer Conference in Spiez in July 2024, but that event was my first experience of its events. More Financial Translation Summer Conference, eminent transcreator Claudia Benetello spoke to Tama Moiser at the online preview for the 2026 edition of the Translating Europe Forum. The 2026 edition of TEF will address “Language professionals matter: adding value in a changing industry“.
Around 25 minutes in, Claudia highlighted the “Expert in the Lead” approach that I presented about in Geneva at FIT XXIII last summer.
Claudia highlights that the industry default approach of the “Human in the Loop” leads to a reduction in the remuneration of translators, that is not justifiable given the limited productivity gains, and the HITLHuman in the loop is an approach advocated by the translation industry, whereby machine translation is used and the role of human translators is secondary – e.g. doing some kind of post-editing. It has become particularly prevalent with the rise of LLMs. My issues with HITL is that it reduces the role of a human (with no mention of their More approach is also not intellectually rewarding enough for translators. Thanks Claudia for spreading the word about XITLEITL/XITL advocates the expert human in the lead rather than in the loop. More.
Claudia will be speaking about Hybridisation on the second day of #2026TEF – I’d really urge my fellow translators to attend (physically and online!) for what will be a programme highlight.
