Autumn 2025 – Reading List

As the evenings quickly draw in after the clocks go back, I take comfort in a good book on the tram home.

The clocks went back at the end of last month, so it is now the part of the year where I usually go home in darkness, and where morning commutes are also in dimmer light. I find it conducive to reading, and being at home in the evenings is also a good time to read after the children have gone to bed. Around this time of year, I’m often looking for new books to read. A couple on this list were sourced from the Christ Church Bazaar here in Vienna.

This autumn I am trying to make my way through:

  • Jamie Bartlett, The Missing Cryptoqueen (a re-read)
  • Annie Chave, Cricket changed my life
  • Edmund de Waal, The Hare with the Amber Eyes (recently gifted to me (thanks again Chris!) – I originally read it in German)
  • Cory Doctorow, Enshittification
  • Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from the Underground (in English translation)
  • Graham Greene, Twenty One Stories
  • Peter Hollins, How to do necessary things
  • Eddie Izzard, Believe Me
  • Robert Musil, Über die Dummheit
  • John Sweeney, Murder in the Gulag
  • Huw Turbervill, The Final Test

This afternoon, I spied a great curated list on my LinkedIn feed. It contains some titles that appear on this list (and previous editions of the list) and will doubtless appear in future reading lists. The list curated by Dagmar Monett-Diaz on topics strongly related to Critical AI looks like it could prove a rich seam of reading for the coming quarters.
