curate’s egg

In its modern usage, saying something is “like the curate’s egg” means that something is both good and bad in places. Originally it was used for something that was obviously and entirely bad, but for reasons of politeness is something that has some good redeeming features. Its origin comes from the tale of a young curate eating breakfast refusing to have his bad breakfast egg replaced with a good one.
